My friend is very anal when it comes to boats. He said that you can’t use Wing nut to tighten down the batteries that they have to be hex nuts. He said if I ever get checked I could possibly get a ticket. Is this true?
Thanks in advance.

When I got a USCG inspection, all he told me was batteries must have the terminals covered or be in a box, I have both posts and studs on my batteries and use both, I do use a SS hex nut in place of the wing nuts just to feel better about the connections
I use stainless hex nuts also.
As a side note, USGG told me that even the + terminals on buss bars had to be covered too.
Several years ago when we bought a new Optimax, the Merc dealer told us that electrical problems wouldn't be covered under warranty if wing nuts were used on battery in place of hex nuts due to possibility of intermittant connections.
cant see it would make a diff, I have used ss wings and never had problems. the nuts have star washer under them if in dought use lock under wing nut..
Wing nuts are designed to be tightened by hand. Hex nuts are designed to be tightened with a tool. Loose battery connections due to improper tightening cause many "Battery" problems and can even cause a fire. A loose connection has a high resistance and starts to act exactly like an electric heater.
I used wing nuts for years as I trailered and always disconnected the battery when done fishing.
Never had an issue with loose connections, heat build up, or inspections.
I did take his advice and used the ss hex nuts to satisfy him.
Now I have to replace the water pump on the 4.3 this weekend...
