Fri Nite 1st Bass of the year, Fish Ohio, PB (sort of...), an incredible coincidence

I started fishing in Feb. during those warm weekend nights with not a single bite. Then comes March and every weekend so far it's been too cold until Friday night when I decided to go out for a nice 34 degree stroll with my fishing pole. I started about 2:45 am and fished about a 2 cast average in 6 spots fishing slowly with a weightless junebug colored 5" senko. By then I had pretty much given up on anything other than just enjoying the night, I was listening to music which I rarely do and when I got to the 7th spot. The wind blew my line in the tree limbs twice before I finally got a cast out the gap I was fishing in and when I went to retrieve I thought somehow I was snagged again. I tugged at it 3 times then put hard pressure on it and then it started to move so I whacked it hard and it was battle on! It was a lot of fun on my med/light setup! The result: 22" 6.48 lbs and a 15.5" girth. Only my PB by weight... I got a 23" 6.25 ounce but it was in the late fall and not loaded with eggs in prespawn. After that fish spawns I don't think it would be my PB anymore. The coincidence? One year ago to within an hour I caught my PB smallmouth 22" 5.5 lbs during one of the craziest nights of fishing I ever had which ended with 14 bass total. I think my post about that was called 14 bass fri nite PB smallmouth. So Happy all night and day sat. but tonight I feel a little let down... like my season is already over. Oh well... I'm sure I'll be ok by tomorrow! Oh yeah... I caught them both in the same spot! Fish

Since I fish from the bank I can't be too picky... I fish the same places I would any other time. Bass do come into the shallow water in the cold weather at times, even at night, as my experience proves. If you look at all my old posts you will see most are from cold weather months. I fish all my nights off work when its above freezing. I try to fish drop-offs, sideways current for my weightless baits, any normal daytime trick. You just have to go try - that's the main thing... bass feed when the opportunity presents itself to eat with little effort.

Thanks guys. I hope that got everybody ready to get out and try. I did not have any luck last weekend but I am ready for Friday night. I am taking my wife out again to try to get her first fish Ohio bass. What is the deal with all the fish Ohio lengths being shortened? I would have had 6 fish Ohio bass last year with the new sizes. I can't imagine how many people with boats will get.
