I is o.k. if there are no swift current or white caps on a windy day. You are just bounced around far too much, the fish would almost have to jurk the rod out of the rod holders to notice a bite. Might want to stay a little way out of the channel since barge waves can be a problem if you are to close.
If you anchor up and the come from behind you might not hear it. To get the rods in and anchor up before the waves are causing problems. Better to safe so stay out of the channel!
