Does anybody have a 2012 F150 with the ecoboost? My dad is looking for a new truck and wants to avoid spending the big bucks for a newer 3/4 ton. He's primarily pulling a 30' camper and occasionally a flat bed with up to 7000lbs. What are your real life experiences with this motor pulling anything with significant weight. Ford supposedly says it can pull over 11,000.

I have a 12 f150 with eco. Its a towing machine. I pull my 20ft lund on a duel axle trailer with no issues. Look in the camper forums online and people will attest to its pulling power. Now being more economical than a v8 is a diff story. I get about 12 mpg when towing my boat on the freeway

I have a '12 supercrew with 6ft bed. Entirely different acceleration than my old v8. Tow a 26ft Striper with bed of truck full of gear/coolers to Lake ontario. No problems towing, 10mpg... Work takes 30miles one way highway, and best avg is 17mpg Dont believe their posted mpg on sticker. Just took it in for svc. Over $1k in repairs. (I had extended warranty) MAP sensor for turbo boost needed replaced. Also hear of issues with water getting into intake for turbo and causing problems. I went into "limp" mode a few times before being serviced. Miss my V8

I have a 2011 F150 Ecoboost and have experienced problems with engine shudder on at least 3 occasions. It happened under heavy acceleration just as it was described in some of the resources I read online. My question is has anyone here had this problem repaired by a dealer. If so, what did they do to fix it and how much did the repair cost?

I love v8s but I'll tell you my Ecoboost tows and pulls way better than any n/a v8 of similar horsepower. The torque is accessible at a much lower rpm than a v8 and usually also makes more torque. The old adage of "no replacement for displacement" simply doesn't apply anymore like it used to. Not with these twin turbo ecoboosts.

My rig weighs about 3600 lbs all in. My 2014 explorer sport tows my boat very, very well. It also has the 3.5l twin turbo ecoboost with some modifications from the f150 version due to it being mounted transversely and being installed in a FWD biased driveline.

I believe they've got the ecoboost IC condensation issue sorted out now. No issues with mine. But yes, I'd probably skip pre-2014 MY ecoboosts.

First off, yes it will pull 7000#........but if you have a tounge weight on the heavy side you will max out on your cargo capacity well before you max out your towing capacity. Now the only way to get your true capacity is to head down to your local scales and get a weight on the truck with just you and a full tank of gas. The numbers the manufactures list are bogus. (Mine were of by about #640 less than stated.). Subtract that from your gvwr and thats your remaining capacity. A 30' camper has a pretty hefty tongue weight most of the time. Than figure in the weight of the hitch and load levelers. Than if you have your propane bottles and your aux battery mounted on tounge. Don't forget any thing you have in the cab.. Passenger, dog, luggage, ect.....and in the bed. Guaranteed to be overloaded on capacity. All half tons. Can you do it? Absolutely! Premature axle bearings and break wear. Most half tons come with passenger tires and not a rated towing tire. And when that ahole cuts you off and you have to react you will know you should have had a bigger truck. Not to mention if state trooper pulls you over its a ticket for being outside of your weight just like a big rig. Not trying to be a downer here but most people figure if it can drag it must be good. Sales people will lie to you also because usually they are not educated themselves. Educate yourself. Ask some questions over on a rv forum. Good luck.

IMO, as Pooch stated, you are getting into the 3/4 ton range with the 30'er plus gear.

Sure the 1/2 ton will pull it with or without the Ecoboost. How long and how safe is another question.

Too, with the poor mileage the Ecoboost gets, might even consider a diesel.
Plenty of truck, plenty of hp and plenty of transmission matched to the engine.

Mine had the horrible shudder on the hiway this past winter and was giving a 0430 code. Dealer replaced a caytalectic converter and a shield on the charge air cooler. Didn't do anything to improve my 14.9 mpg I'm getting. Just got it back from appointment for the brake booster change out. I'm going to replace plugs, I have 62000 miles. They informed me their 100000 mi plugs go bad around 55000. I still have a slight miss and will see if that solves it.

You drive downhill all the way?

When trailering, excess capacity is always a good thing. I see too many F150s driving "tail down" pulling a camper. Very dangerous... And have an accident and your insurance company may determine that you were trailering outside the limits of your vehicle and then you are on your own financially - they can legally deny the claim.
