Spinning setup help

I am asking for opinions for a Medium sized rod/reel setup. I fish the Maumee for white bass and smallies, but also go south the Miami Rivers to fish for smallmouth with my cousin. I recently got a 10ft kayak that I can fish out of and have done 2 floats with it so far on the Little Miami. I used a 6ft Hvy/Med caster setup and my cousins 5'6" med spinning setup which worked out really well. I am in the market for a medium setup myself that is versatile enough that I can use it in the larger Maumee and smaller Miami so I'm not sure whether I should go with a 6ft medium spinning combo or should jump to a 6'6" medium.

Currently I am really looking at the Lew's Speed Spin High Speed Combo. It has a nice gear ratio, 9+1 bearing, wider spool and haven't heard a bad thing about it for 69$. I'm looking to stay around the same budget.

Any opinions would be really helpful.

Also if any yakers' read this thread, have you floated the maumee? I have been thinking about trying a float from Grand Rapids to waterville for smallies and am not sure if the waters are technical or if it's a nice jog.

Thanks! :D

I just placed an order on tackle warehouse for that same lews reel should be here tomorrow or thursday. I plan on fishing Thursday night so I will let you know how I like it. I also will be using it for smallmouth. I will be putting it on a cheaper rod also from tackle warehouse it's a okuma reflextion. Not sure how I will like the rod but the reviews seemed alright for the price.

Ducman - thanks for the input, I think I'm gonna look for a 6'6" with fast action tip. Should make for a nice all around rod just do not know the brand. Landing shouldn't be much of a disadvantage with my long arms and a net.

Hawg - I would greatly appreciate that. What made you steer away from the combo? The reel on lews website is 59.99 like just about anywhere else and they had the combo for 69.99. Just seems like the extra 10 for a rod is a deal unless lews rods are not up to par.

Crap I read your first comment wrong. I didn't see that you mentioned it was a combo at first. This was tge reel I thought you was talking about which is on sale for 68 dollars right now
. I'm sorry about that. However I did check out that combo that you was talking about on their website for 70 dollars and it looked pretty good. I actually kinda wish I saw this combo before I bought mine. Tackle warehouse doesn't have this one on their website. Wish I could have helped you man

No worries, I saw that reel as well so still if you wouldn't mind let me know how well she does. I can't afford to buy a lot of setups for different baits so I'm trying to find a jack of all trades if you will. I figure a higher gear ratio might be better because I can always slow my retrieve but I can only real so fast. Fishing from the yak early morning I was using my caster which is a quantum energy pt power and it took me forever to get my buzz bait on top water.

I think I have narrowed my rod down to either the fenwick hmg or 13 fishing omen black. Hopefully I can find a store around me so I can get one in my hand before purchasing

Well took the reel out and I'm pretty happy with it. Looks great on the rod. Never got a smallmouth on it so I can't really tell you how it handle them and how the drag is. Only caught a couple small crappie. I thought it casted great and the high speed was nice but different for me as I'm use to lower speeds on spinning reels. I found casting a 2.75 joshy that I really had to watch how fast I was reeling. Overall seems like a pretty good reel
