I would like to hear from those of you that have shot a straight stocked 45-70 vs. a pistol grip stock 45-70.
* Are there differences in felt recoil, between the two stock styles?
I'm considering the purchase of a Marlin 45-70, but I'm deciding between the 1895 Cowboy with the 26" barrel and the Classic model 1895 with the 22" barrel. I would prefer the Cowboy, as I like the longer octagon barrel and the traditional lines of the straight stock. However, if the recoil is greatly increased due to the stock configuration, I would opt for the Classic 1895 with the 22" barrel.
Your experiences are greatly appreciated, Bowhunter57
I don't think you'll notice an appreciable difference in recoil. I have two shotguns with straight "English" stocks, and a couple with pistol grips. Biggest difference in recoil is semi auto or not. The semi autos eat up some of the recoil, big difference after a box or two of shells. Get the one you like.
Not really a difference in felt recoil between the two stocks.
The big difference will be in the butt end itself. Pistol grip stocks tend to have a flat or flatish butt that you can easily buy pads or buffers for. Most of the straight stocks I've seen have the curved butts with "sharp" points that can cause you some pain during extended range sessions, or if you're a big guy like me. I've not found a decent pad for those types of stocks yet.
I've got a old JM 1895 with straight stock, I shoot hot 300gr JHP hand loads. Gun kicks about like a 20g single
shot with high brass loads. The only time I notice recoil is shooting off bench. I'm 6', 160#. If you are buying
this gun for Ohio deer season, I would buy the Cowboy for 3 reasons. It weighs a little more, soaking up a
little more recoil. Longer barrel has advantage on sighting. The rifling in Cowboys is better for use of cast
bullets. Any bullet that shoots accurately out of your gun is more than needed to take a white tail. All the
fancy expensive bullets on market for 45/70 are not needed for Ohio deer hunting. My 95 shoots jacketed
bullets better than cast, or I would be shooting cast. I've owned many 45/70s and a lot of them do better with
cast.
