Saw the same "shanties" yesterday. They were actually 2 airboats and some shanties. Talked to one of the guys who were out this morning and they confirmed the last good MODIS image.....2 miles of open water outside the shore ice. Definitely steer clear of that area in a south or southwest wind.

Did they say how fare until they got to the open water? I have some spots I would like to hit if I can get out at least 4 mile of shore. I too seen the MODIS image. Just don't look like you can get out that far????????

That's unreal- I can't believe there isn't much more ice with the sustained cold that we've had. I fished out there a few years back when all of those people were stranded and it seems it wasn't as cold as now yet the lake was iced over to the ditch. I guess strong current/wind is the only answer.

Its the winds that have kept that area open. The big blow after the snowstorm we had a couple weeks back broke a huge portion off and pushed it NE. It never froze enough to hold up to the winds we've had since. There's only a couple small islands on the west end.... unlike the area between Catabwa and Pt Peelee where ice locks in.

The signs were there a couple of years ago but we were allowed to access the ice at the far west end of the parking lot. I would assume it will be the same this year.

Spoke to an officer at district 2 headquarters in Findlay today about accessing the lake from crane creek. Was told you can take quads and sleds to the ice from the parking lot as long as you travel down the lanes that are there. They are not marked but you should be able to recognize them.

Good luck if you get out
