well my tags are due today.... but the motor let loose in the Chevy last week. so my idea, take insurance off of it ($131 a month) so i called the agent and said hey, drop coverage, estimating to be down 1-2 months....
he said he couldent...legally, because Ohio does random checks. they mail you or your insurance company (if they know who it is)... ( if your registration is current) and ask for proof of insurance.... i said well the trucks broke down and out on the farm... he still insisted it could be done...but if i got the letter he couldn't vouch for me...
penalty for tagged car, no insurance...
loss of license for 90 days.loose plates and registration for car/truck reinstatement fee $100.00 $50 penalty fee and retain special hi risk insurance for 3-5 years.
now, I'm all for this...for people who don't have insurance, and still drive... i know its one thing if you cant afford it...but still if you hit someone, like happened to my brother a few years back and land them in the hospital... you need coverage!
but does anyone else agree that if your car is broken, and you want to drop insurance you should be able too? i mean if you get caught out driving and dont have it thats your butt... but for those honest folk, who just have it broke down... why?
my tags expired yesterday, and he dropped insurance off of it. ill pick it up in a few months... but if this was like december...and my car was broke for a year( like my mustang has been since Feb**) i would have to pay insurance all year long while it just sat there! or risk the terms...
** mustang is on loan, full coverage paid every month anywhere... even though its broken...gee it sucks paying for something you cant use.

if the registration is expired you wont get a random check, but if its current you must have it insured. got busted on that one...had a 69 lamans i was restoring(no engine or tranny in it) city ordanance says i have to have it registered so i do...6 months later i get a letter from DMV requesting proof of ins...i call and explain they say too bad...BAM 90 day suspention etc.. its total BS!!!

That 20 dollar late fee they put on the license plate renewal sucks too. I have a trailer that I use 10 times a year and sometimes never so I let the registration go until I am ready. I found out the hard way that you have to keep all registrations up to date no matter what.

Trailers and Motorcycles are exempt from the $20.00 late fee.
If you were charged, the DVM made a mistake.
Here's a list of reasons for suspension, but I'm sure this isn't complete. I've heard that many people get suspensions not related to driving or vehicles, and they don't even know they're under suspension.
Dropping out? Thats dumb.. i know people who did... and they were good drivers.
A firearm on school property? Thats ohio trying to screw us again i bet. A ccw holder can carry on school property for pickup or drop off of student only.

Yeah you need a new insurance company if they won't let you drop down to a minimum coverage for far less than what you are paying when it is on the road.
I had a pickup that I parked for a few months, and I was paying 20$ or so a month for fire and theft, and my normal cost was 100$ a month. Been a few years but its still common, especially with all the snowbirds up here.

In the event you get the letter, you can request a reprieve. If you can prove its disabled(I just described the vehicle), they'll grant you leniency. This happened to me last winter when I wasn't using one of my cars(battery died and flat tire). No suspension. They are reasonable but you have to know to ask. Can't guarantee it will work for anyone else but it worked for me. My leniency letter was direct and to the point. No dancing around.

Just be thankful we don't have personal property tax...
My parents pay over $4ka year in MO. A couple Harleys, 2 trucks, 1 car, 2 boats, a few atv's, tractors, outboard motors, lawn tractors, trailers anything with a title, running or not. Ohio's insurance law is not that bad in comparison.
