First you need to decide on what you want to spend on a new unit. Thats the biggest decision. On what unit, I would look at the Humminbird line. They are easy to use and easy to move around the screens. Hope this helps.

I dont think the sonar of the Lowrance can be beat. I have heard the gps is equal to Lowrance. But marking fish at speed and size is important to me.
There is so higher dollar units like simrad and furano dont have any experience with them. Price point is a big thing in all units. Good luck in your decision.

price isnt a big deal i would like to stay under $1000. i am use to a simple fishfinder and have done well with it but i have never used a high dallor one to know the difference. i have done alittle research and i like the structure mapping on the lowrance. but as far as i could tell that cost extra from the unit itself. this is my first boat and dont know much about the added benefits of a high end finder.

Just get the best and dont look back. Get a Furuno, you wont be sorry. Not much more price wise compared to Lowrance's top models or Humminbird.

I use a lowrance lcx-27c. It does a good job, however , it has lots of features I do not use.
Definitely get a color unit !!

What do you look for in a sonar to be able to pick up fish while on plane?I have a lowrance 334 transom mount and have to be under 5 mph to get a clear view, ping and chart speed are all the way up .It,s on an alum.boat also.I would also like to buy a new one but don,t know what to look for to cure this problem .Thanks

Reading fish on plane has more to do with your transducer not your unit. Get an Airmar transducer. I run a Furuno FCV585 with an Airmar P66 and can mark fish at 25 mph and also read the bottom.

Transducer placement is very important make sure your in clean water (or smooth with out bubbles) and dragging 1/4 to 1/2 inch I can mark over 40 mph with Lowrance ducer.
Set at 83 you should have very little interference on screen just blips of (fish) the real thick ones are bait the the soundings that are hook size are walleyes if your fishing and marking good run over them on plane to see how they look. Best way to see how they look.

Default agree

I think placement of transducers ,units and wires have more to do with it then brands as they all seem to work pretty good. I prefer Lowerance and Eagle my self and always had good luck with the hummingbirds also. Now I have never had experience with the Great big dollar ones as 1000.00 has always been my limit. I know they are more powerful wattage wise. So probably show more detail or bottom separation. Can't see where they could do more other then an 8 inch screen might be nice. LOL But bottom line i think is if your over fish they will show them and a Gps signal only gets so close. But you'll need to get the Captains to explain the worth of the 2000.00 and up. In fact I would really be interested too!
I know for one over the years I have never used any one of them to the extent of its ability. Now with my Eagle I have tried to learn every feature it has since I got it. And how to correctly use the plotter and all the other bells and Whistle's. So I am getting so much more with out even an upgrade. Got to say it is amazing what they do. But its still equipment and requires the fisherman to do more then just look.
