Last night a good friend of mine got shot by a stray .45 round while attending the fireworks display at Fairfield Ohio. He and his wife were lying on a blanket on the banks of the Great Miami River watching the fireworks. She was resting her head on his shoulder. Just as they started to get up and walk back to their car he got hit in the same shoulder that she had been resting her head on just a few seconds earlier. In other words, she just barely escaped taking a .45 round to the head. Thankfully, his injury was not life threatening. Miraculously, the bullet did not break any bones, missed all the vital organs and did not sever any arteries. It went in his shoulder and lodged against his rib cage. The emergency room doctors decided to leave it in for now. They're hoping it will eventually work its way out. If not, he will need to have surgery to remove it before long. All because some idiot on the other side of the river decided to fire his .45 into the air during the fireworks display. I guess he was too damn poor to buy his own fireworks. Or, more likely, he was just too damn stupid. As outdoorsmen I hope we are all smart enough to know better. What goes up must come down. Or, first rule of firearms safety: never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot. Don't be an idiot. Never pull the trigger until you've identified your target and know what you're shooting at. Too bad they don't require I.Q. tests for everyone that wants to buy a gun. That's a gun control law I could get behind.
Well said. Last time I checked, when you point a gun up in the air and fire it you have absolutely no idea where the bullet will hit...breaking one of gun safety commandments. Idiots.

thats messed up for sure and i can understand your anger, but you are making an assumption that i dont agree with. how do you know how this gun was obtained? this gun could of been stolen OR not legally bought. the guys i know that legally carry guns dont shoot up it the air.

I was thinking the same thing. Most law abiding folks with guns aren't out shooting them up in the air celebrating holidays.
I was being facetious. I don't believe in gun control laws. Also, it happened in Hamilton, not Fairfield. I always get those two towns mixed up. As for the bullet I assume they will remove it soon. I guess they're hoping it will work its way out of the muscle and closer to the surface so it will be easier to get to.
it seems like we hear about atleast one of these stories every year. its that 10% rule again. you just have 10% of people that just dont get it, and seems they never will. thank god somebody wasnt killed. but may have been in some other part of the country.

That's a terrible thing. Hopefully, somebody in the crowd will come forward with a description or ID of the idiot. Surely, somebody seen the shooter. It's this kinda crap that lends itself to the idea that guns are violent, and gun violence is random.

Way more common than you would think, same thing happened to a coworker who was watching fireworks over in Chillicothe. Based on this thread, that is a least 3 such events Wednesday just in Ohio.
Saw on the news this morning, didn't catch where it happened but a guy had a bullet go through the bill of his hat, hit his nose, chin, and was stopped by a medallion he was wearing on his necklace. That is 4 people hit, what are the odds of that and how many bullets have to be raining down for 4 random people to be hit on the same day. This is just more ammo for the anti-gun people, stupid gun owners doing stupid things and making it harder for the rest of us.

I think most are stupid people that just happen to also own guns. I'm sure they are reckless in all aspects of their lives not just while handling a firearm.
I see a lot of stupid people over a years time, some also happen to also be hunters, and CCW license holders. I sure don't want to be around them.
I almost went there but my two kids, my wife and I fell asleep in front of the TV after dinner. A coworker told me that as he was leaving there were police everywhere (way more than usual) and there was an ambulance pulling up. I guess that was for your friend, I’m glad he’s okay.

well first thing hunter ed teaches children and old a like. Also no whats behind your target. So sorry it happened and happy no one died. But is a good reason to require all to have hunters ed. Just because we are older dont mean we necessarily know any more. Feel the same way about people boating Erie. Lives could be saved.

I know three people who have a CCW who actually make me feel less safe knowing that they’re packing. One of the guy’s even jokes about losing his gun during a robbery. Like you said though, they show bad judgment in most aspects of their lives, but even they wouldn't fire their guns without any idea where the bullet is going to land.
Now that I think about it one of them has lost her CCW, THAT makes me feel safer.

Reason: grammar

Would make about the same difference as requiring everyone to take a drivers education course prior to being able get a drivers license to drive a car.
Requiring everyone to take hunter ed or gun safety 101 would have no impact, just as there are still really stupid drivers even though they all took the classes.
Varying degrees of stupid people and normal people that do stupid things will always exist and no amount of training and requirements will every change that.
Who knows who fired the shots in question, could have been anyone with any background. I hear a lot of shots around the Fourth and New Years and I'm pretty sure a lot of those are up into the air.
