Spots not ruled out. Its definitely not a largemouth. The upper lip doesnt look close to extending past the eye. Im not seeing enough of a dark hue to call it a smally for sure. The pail sides are throwing me off.

Im leaning Spot. The colors and eyes are off to be a smallmouth. I know habitat can have an effect on that but seems to drastic. Appears the dorsals are touching which again would rule out largemouth. Not certain but id have to be convinced otherwise.

Yeah.. but would you bet all your fishing gear on it?

its a smallmouth. zero doubt. spotted bass have black coloring. that fish is clearly brown. markings on smallies are normally caused by stress, and coloring is all about water clarity. that fish is absolutely a smallie.
There's all the other differences too like the jaw, tooth patches, etc. but on 99.9% of the fish if its brown its a smallie, if it's green it's a lm or a spot. Sometimes you get that odd colored fish in the mix, where you really have to look at the details, but that is rare.
usually in the river ya get smallies and rock bass. This is a smallie for sure!
