Default Alum spillway 3/14/09

Hit the spillway today with my dad fishing for eyes and got nada. Saw one saugeye snagged by a muskie guy throwing a crankbait. I was glad to see the man release the fish without a second thought. There are alot of folks that would put a snagged fish on a stringer, it was good to see a law abiding sportsman.

Went pond fishing after that and I still struck out. My pops got on the board with a 14" largemouth.

Thanks for the report. I agree about the C&R on the saugeye. Good people are out there everywhere, we just listen to the news too much.

Glad to hear somebody got on the board.

What was the flow like?

The flow was pretty much non-existant, especially since the actual resevoir is still way down and only some water is trickling down a side pipe up by the water gate.

Honestly most alum muskie hook ups in the spillway come on 1/8 ounce twistertail jigs. Not alot get landed that way though. It would figure someone would have to get a muskie in thier way when fishing for seyes. I have seen skies caught on jointed shadrap like lures. Firetiger.

jcr, thanks for the report. we need some water moving through the river to get it going again, but it was a great day to be out.

southernohioelite,
a couple of good spillway musky baits are husky jerks and rogues. My buddies and I have hooked our share of musky on these jerkbaits while saugeye fishing (jerkbaits are of various sizes and colors, musky don't seem to be too finicky when they are hungry).
Years ago, I watched a musky fisherman down in the spillway using a homemade lure about 10-12" long, looked like a whittled down 2x4 with a paint job and hooks...... caught 2 musky in the 30 minutes or so that I saw him doing it.

I don't feel bad at all. After all the years of tangled lines and other drama very young anglers give thier parents I owe him quite a few more. He lost many a fish while removeing my hooks and bobbers from trees and rocks on shore.
