Mobile app iPhone

Just bought an iPhone and I'm having a bit of a difficult time on the mobile app with pictures. When I open pics I can't seem to get out of them without shutting the app down completely. Anyone care to tell me what I'm doing wrong?

When you have the picture open, tap the top of the screen and that will or should give you the option to go back.
