The authors noted that at least three Asian carp have been captured in Lake Erie and appeared healthy, indicating they were “surviving and growing very well.” Modeling done for the report also showed that it would take an adult population of only 10 females and 10 males to have a greater than 50 percent chance of successfully spawning.
The most likely entry point into the Great Lakes basin is the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS) into Lake Michigan. The effectiveness of the electrical barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) was not evaluated. Nevertheless, the complex nature of the CAWS and proximity of bigheaded carp populations led to the conclusion this is the most likely entry point.
Once bigheaded carps have gained entry into the basin, they are expected to spread to other lakes within 20 years. The spread will be more rapid for lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie, and potentially Lake Superior; longer for Lake Ontario.
Bigheaded carps would find suitable food, and thermal and spawning habitats in the Great Lakes basin that would allow them to survive and become established. The areas that would be attractive and favorable are Lake Erie, including Lake St. Clair, and high productivity embayments of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron and Ontario.
There is a greater than 50% probability of successful mating each year with very few (< 10) adult females (and a similar number of adult males) within the basin of a Great Lake.
Population growth is most sensitive to the survivorship of juveniles.
The consequences of an established bigheaded carp population are expected to include changes in planktonic communities, reduction in planktivore biomass, reduced recruitment of fishes with early pelagic life stages, and reduced stocks of piscivores [i.e. walleye, perch, smallmouth, etc.].
To reduce the probability of introduction (either at the arrival, survival, establishment or spread stage), and delay or reduce subsequent ecological consequences, immediate prevention activities would be most effective, especially in conjunction with population management activities at the invasion front.

The Carp have also just been found in the LMR by the ODNR...they are setting up data gathering stations now, trying to figure out how to prevent the spread!?????
You would think that with the advanced warning of their spread and the time they had, that something could have been done...it's too bad that the States and Government just sat on their hands...now it's too late and the consequences will be a disaster for fishing!
I don't think it is too late. There is an army of us out there who could do our part with sufficient organization and support. I get a kick out of the eupemism of "immediate prevention activities would be most effective, especially in conjunction with population management activities." That translates into "kill them all now."

If they have found "a few" in Erie...then there are ALOT more!
Once they are found...it's over!

Like Nero fiddling while Rome burned! The government will study a problem to death, all while the problem grows more serious and entrenched every day! What better way to burn more taxpayer (our) money and then claim that they need more!
Pardon the correction but perhaps KILL and CAN them ALL; they sell very well in Asia. And have said this before but in about 5 national "blind" taste tests MOST people PREFERED the big head carp over tuna (which is being HEAVILY overfished)....turn a PROBLEM into $$$$$$$...
The federal government isn't sitting on their butts. They're actually fighting AGAINST the states in the courts. Yep, good ole President Obama and friends argued against 5 states (Ohio included) in a case in front of the United States Supreme Court. Evidently they think more time needs to be given to studying the problem. Here is a link to the story http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...8DEGRM20120227
Time for a change in Washington people. Get out and vote this November.
