Made it out for a little camp and yak with the boy saturday night through sunday. Caught a number of small to decent smallies on a ultralight with twister and jig floating/wading down from Ft. Ancient. The water was pretty low, so it was a lot of getting out, but it was not so low that it felt like a complete slog. Stayed the night at
Little Miami Canoe Rental right along the river. It was a really good experience, the campground was nice, well taken care of, and on the river.
Sunday we rolled on down from there. Out of a little riffle, I got a bigger tug than I'd felt to that point. It made a nice bend, then I landed the largest (to that point) fish of the trip. After a while, I got kind of bored with the twister, and started trying a bunch of different baits on the float. I ended up going with the one saltwater Gulp bait that I still had from a salty trip to Florida. I got a couple of hits from smallies, but none that stuck. I was absentmindedly throwing and talking to the boy when I thought I hooked into the mother of all smallies, but turned out to be a nice channel. It tried to go upcurrent, and ended up dragging us around to shore, where I finished the fight. The boy was quick in getting me a glove and snapping a few pics, and the fish was released quickly.
It was a pretty nice weekend, and very cool to explore a new area of the LMR. There were lots of people on the water on the Ft. Ancient to Morrow stretch, but it thinned dramatically as we got away from the liveries.
