Emmert told Y! Sports that a multi-year suspension of the football program was "vigorously discussed" with members of the Division I Board of Directors. Ultimately, Penn State's willingness to take its medicine – commissioning, accepting and making public the damaging Freeh Commission report, and accepting massive NCAA penalties without due process – helped save the school from a complete shutdown of football for a season or longer, Emmert said.

"The resolve demonstrated by Penn State to get past this was very important in people's minds," he said.

Sounds like Emmert thinks Penn State dodged a bullet.

I am not a defender of the people that are guilty of this terrible crime....As far as we know THEY ARE ALL GONE! They will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!
I agree with taking away the bowl money, the fines, etc! If anyone else was involved in the cover up they need to be fired, sued, etc...the University will be sued, the State will be sued, and the guilty parties will ALL be sued!
THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, LOCAL BUSINESSES/ECONOMY, STUDENTS, AND OTHER PEOPLE AT THE UNIVERSITY HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG....BUT YET THEY ARE PUNISHED BY PRETTY MUCH KILLING THE ENTIRE FOOTBALL PROGRAM FOR MANY YEARS TO COME! IT WAS NOT A DIRTY PROGRAM....IT HAD DIRTY PEOPLE RUNNING IT! JUST BECAUSE JOPA WAS THE FIGUREHEAD AND LINCH-PIN DOESN"T MEAN THE COVER-UP WENT DEEPER INTO THE PROGRAM....IT WAS A FEW GREEDY PEOPLE, MAKING TERRIBLE DECISIONS....NOT THE WHOLE PROGRAM!
The NCAA did not give PSU the "Death Penalty" because it would have destroyed the School, LOCAL ECONOMY, and it's ability to pay fines etc!
The NCAA should have just doubled or tripled the fine and taken bowl money for 4 years instead of putting a crippled program on the field! The people who are guilty will be punished by the law and public opinion...PSU
Football could have helped with the healing but now will just allow the Sandusky memories to fester with each 70-6 loss for MANY MORE years to come!

First of all, you need to realize that the entire community is part of the problem because of the way the treated JoePa and the football program.. for Christs sake who puts up a statue of a man that's STILL LIVING?!?

Now Im not saying they need to be punished but the entire community needs to realize that there are a lot more things that are more important to winning football games, and the way to do that is basically take football out of the equation. There is no longer any need to put such an emphasis on football in the community for the next 5+ years and that's exactly the way it should be.

There's currently a little debate going on regarding a facebook post I made last night. I'm not going to go into all of that, but my college roommate is the biggest PSU fan I've ever met. His father graduated from the school and he's been a fan his entire life.

When we roomed together, he lauded Paterno for his integrity, claimed Jerry Sandusky was the defensive zen master he proved to be, and was an encyclopedia of knowledge on the history of the program.

Fast forward, he is now a teacher of children just shy of the victims' ages. I'm going to post his response to the penalties below.....

Quote:
The punishment was harsh but by no means undeserved. Paterno and his legacy needed to be rewritten. The university leaders need to be brought into a court of law. Paterno, who preached doing the right thing, broke his own code of ethics. I agree with the bowl ban, the loss of scholarships and the fines. All of these men failed to protect the rights of innocent children.
I do feel for the current players. Their dreams of playing in Happy Valley are destroyed. Their football careers are suffering for crimes they did not commit.
I will never root for the Penn State football program again.
Everyone posting here roots for a different team than Penn State. My friend, who was every bit the passionate fan that I am for Michigan and many of you are for Ohio State, is so disgusted by what went on at that university that he's chosen stop supporting the team.

The team is not part of the healing. It's a reminder that for at least (and let's be real, likely more) 14 years, that entire program ignored UNSPEAKABLE criminal acts.

Listen, I feel terrible for the current players, because they were lied to when Paterno sat on their parents' couches and promised all that virtue and academic influence that he always did promise, but they were given a way out of the disaster they're now a part of when Emmert decided to make transferring easy.

If the players want to leave, they have every opportunity to do so. If they want to stay, then that is the sign of solidarity that Intimidator is seeking in terms of "helping the healing."

When a dyed in the wool, but level-headed, PSU fan who is also an elementary school teacher says what my friend had to say, there is no argument against this punishment that I consider valid.

I guess I don't understand your point because it is illogical. The reason I posted was in response to those who said the penalty was too harsh, not too lenient. Let's not resort to using our posts for the sake of argument.

My buddy represents the average fan. I don't know why you'd be seeking the opinion of an NCAA employee. Stop trolling.

[QUOTE=jcustunner24;1460863]. that entire program ignored UNSPEAKABLE criminal acts.

That is the key part I disagree with!
You had 4 or 5 TOP people that knew and hid the facts, the rest of the coaches, team, and PROGRAM has been proven to have been in the Dark and did not know what was going on!
PUNISH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GUILTY!

As for the PSU fans and community, they believed in the team and JoePa and that's why the statue was a monument to a living legend! His Legend is now forever tarnished and it is not the communities fault, nor the students, nor the school, for believing in someone that had always done good...then with 1 mistake (major, minor, or criminal) their whole life's work is turned inside-out to be mis-represented or false!
Kinda like us OSU fans with Woody or Tress!

Count me in with the crowd that considers the punishment levied by the NCAA to be justified. Unfortunately, as is always the case with NCAA enforcement, people that were not part of the problem get affected by the punishment through association with the athletic program.

Also, I do not believe that only 4 or 5 people at the top had an idea what was going on, and that is why Penn State leadership has rolled over without a whimper. They want the investigative phase to be done, keep the focus on the story of the fallen legend, then move on to the "healing process".

I found a link to this piece on another board disscussing this topic. it is "a bit" conspiratorial, and long, but a very interesting read if you like conspiracy theories.

No, not only 4 or 5 at the TOP knew. Everyone from the TOP to the janitors knew. The board of directors knew. The assistant coaches knew. The police department knew. You have to be naive to believe that rumours were not plentiful on campus after the 1998 police investigation.

No, this is nothing like Treseel or Woody. Woody was on video punching a kid during a game. Tressel admitted in public that he recieved the emails and did not forward them. Absolutely noone in either of those circumanstances claimed ignorance.

To compare the cover up of brutual rapes of children over decades to admittedly covering up emails that involve a federal drug investigation shows it has still not hit home exactly what happened in happy valley for so long.

It is despicable to make that comparison.

Until Charges are levied against anyone else, then those at the Top are the only ones who knew...You are suppossedly innocent in this Country, until you are proven guilty in a Court of Law! Public opinion or rumors do not convict!

Didn't claim ignorance, I made a comparison of PSU Fans believing in a Person that HAD ALWAYS DONE GOOD and then had 1 mistake...Whether MINOR, MAJOR, OR CRIMINAL...like OSU Fans and WOODY or Tress. WOODY AND TRESS made Minor mistakes in my opinion that tarnished their image and cost their jobs...some people still believe that Joe did nothing wrong and the Freeh report does not PROVE Joe had anything to hide from!

BOTH WERE COVER-UPS...varying degrees...JOEPA COVERED UP SOMETHING WHICH IS TERRIBLE IMHO...HE IS DEAD, SO WE WILL NEVER HEAR HIS SIDE OF THE STORY!

NO! There are varying degrees of every crime and they can still be compared in certain ways...Idols Fall to varying degrees and some people still want to believe that the good out weighs the Bad in every case!

Perhaps you did not pay attention during the Sandusky trial but a janitor testified that another janitor (it's complicated) told him he walked in on Sanducky abusing a child.

The police investigated the incident in 1998.

McQueary (sp?) walked in on Sandusky abusing a child.

These FACTS can not be disputed. You just have to open your eyes and see them.

Yes, you are claiming ignorance. You are claiming the players, some coaches, janitors, students police department: everyone in happy valley basically who has not been charged criminally were ignorant to the fact these acts were taking place.

They are far from the same. The entire university (supposedly) did not cover up the emails JT recieved, only JT himself did. On the other hand the entire school / town covered up Sandusky abusing boys.

You are comparing one man (JT) covering up his actions (lack of) to an entire community (pretty much everyone in happy valley) to covering up the actions of another (Sandusky).

It could be argued (and has been in the appropriate thread) that JT did the right thing by not reporting. It also could be argued that he did the right thing by not bringing down the entire university and took the majority of the burden upon himself. He stood up like a man and took the punishment.

If you would take off your blinders and come back to reality you could see how sickening these crimes were and just how deep the corruption ran at Penn State.

Coach Hayes was a football coach.

Coach Tressel was a football coach.

Coach Patenro was an idol.

That is the problem.

I'm not sure I will say this correctly, but it's your mentality that allowed this to go on for so long. When you hear of the NCAA wanting to punish the "culture" at Penn St, it's your line of thinking they are talking about. They do not ever want a program or the fans to turn a blind eye to this type of behavior ever again. The culture in Penn State is that no wrong can be done and that is what allowed the abuse to continue for so long.

Everyone in Penn State passed the buck around like a bunch of cowards.

SHAME ON THEM.

Didn't the Police investigation in 1998 end with no charges filed and no wrong doing found??

Workplace rumors, the janitor that was testifying did not see anything!

Mcquery is a punk...at the least, he should have busted Sandusky in the Mouth if he saw that happening...then kicked his butt, then went to the school and Police!

If you believe the reports...this CRIME was kept quiet by the TOP People...SO, the whole School, Program, and Area, would not have known!
If rumors fly, do you automatically believe them, especially when they were not proven by the Police! ??

I don't have BLINDERS on...This is one of the most sickening crimes that someone can do...you and the "like minded" are the one that are using the same logic to convict an entire Population for sins of the leaders!

To some, Coach Hayes IS an idol and his Legend continues to grow after his death! JoePa was a LIVING IDOL...remember about idols??

The Culture of GREED, HORRIBLE, and CRIMINAL decision making at PSU stopped with the people being charged...if the entire community, school, or program are not being charged....THEN THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY, SCHOOL, OR PROGRAM, SHOULD NOT BE PUNISHED...Just the people that passed the "BUCK" around!

First of all, if I hear a rumor that children are being sexually assaulted you can bet your ass I am not questioning the validity of that. Im telling someone in charge, plain and simple.

Also, the fact that this was able to go on for 14 years with only the top people knowing about means a lot of others weren't doing their jobs correctly. The board of trustees didn't know anything about it, but were found to have passed on reform several years ago that would have put an end to this a long time ago. That same board of trustees didn't have balls to fire joe paterno after they asked him to resign four years ago and he declined.

Just because people aren't guilty of knowing this was happening doesn't mean they aren't guilty of enabling a culture that allowed this to happen. Bo schembechler was a living legend in ann arbor too but he was never allowed to get bigger than the school. Penn State as a school, allowed the football program to get bigger than the school and that's more than just the 4-5 people who are now fired.

I agree things SHOULD have been done differently...alot differently!

There have been alot of people that have went through that school and football program in 14 years and MANY of them have said they never knew or heard of these things going on! If you had heard things and were a moral person, you would at least question someone...with that many people not questioning anything leads me to believe the cover-up was fully in place by the people who are named and involved with the allegations!

I also thought JoePa hurt the Program by staying but PSU created that MONSTER! The difference with Bo and JoePa is about 40 some more years at the same place! Michigan has HISTORY without Bo...JoePa was PSU History!

The first sentence of your last paragraph is the exact reason for these sanctions.

i think this is the point people are trying to make with you. the ncaa doesnt want a university to create another monster like jopa, therefore sanctions are being levied to deter a school from alowing absolute power ever again.

i was on the fence for the longest time, for awhile, i kind of felt like you do but i now see why these penalties have been put in place. to bad for the current students but you will always have people being punished for things that happened in the past who are innocent when it comes to ncaa sanctions. there is no way around it.

They do not ever want a program or the fans to turn a blind eye to this type of behavior ever again. The culture in Penn State is that no wrong can be done and that is what allowed the abuse to continue for so long.

Everyone in Penn State passed the buck around like a bunch of cowards.
Trust me when I say this. You said it to perfection. I've been watching this thread, avoiding comment all day because you've done such an excellent job stating the obvious. The "It's your mentality that allowed this to go on for so long" is 100% accurate. YOU GET IT COMPLETELY.

This logical statement is the reason I posted the comments from my friend who is also a teacher of children. If you step back from football long enough to think about what happened at that university, there is NO WAY you can look at this and think PSU got the short end of the stick.

My friend's father graduated from PSU. He knows at least as much about history, tradition, and football as everyone posting here. His wife also just had a baby and he teaches children. The heinous crimes committed against those kids made him abandon all allegiance to not only PSU, but JoePa's legacy as well. That should speak volumes to anyone who isn't thinking football first.

Intimidator, I respect you, but quite frankly, this thread has made you look foolish.

This is stupid. Period. The difference between Bo and Paterno is that Bo never had a coach under his wing that was accused on multiple occasions of abusing children. The difference between Bo and Paterno is that when Bo died, he didn't die in a hail of scrutiny. The difference between Bo and Paterno is that Bo never did a single thing to hurt the university he represented. Quite frankly, the difference between Bo and Paterno is Bo knew right from wrong, and would never put football ahead of integrity.

Bottom line is that Bo cared about Michigan, Paterno cared about Paterno. End of story.

to bad for the current students but you will always have people being punished for things that happened in the past who are innocent when it comes to ncaa sanctions. there is no way around it.

Innocent people are punished for things they've never done. Laws, laws, & more laws most created because of some dumb moron doing crap that's plain stupid. Hence the need to pass more legislation to try to curb that type of behavior. Yeah these kids playing for PSU didn't have anything to do with what occurred there but they get to suffer the repercussions, its life IMHO.

Anyone of those players that's unhappy with what was handed down is free to leave if they want to. Apparently they fine with where they're at because they spoke out just yesterday. Saying they're committed to PSU and are staying. More power to them but if it was me I'D go elsewhere. Wouldn't want to even be on that campus, makes me wanna throw up.
