Hey guys, I haven't posted since last summer but I wanted to let you guys know that the rocky has been really good for smallmouth since the water level has gone down from the early rains. I won't give away any specific spots but I've got 4 fish over 18 inches in just a couple days fishing. Get south in the river away from the metropark traffic and find the pools that are more than a couple feet deep and the fish will be there. Some are still on beds so please return quickly. If I can ever get out other than alone, I'll get some pictures on here. Go fishing!

I have several decent spots, but I'm always on the lookout for something new. Obviously the best fishing up there would be a charter, but that's not in the budget.

If any fellow OGFers have a tip or two, I'd appreciate the help...
Thanks!!!

I fumbled around the nightstand completely disoriented. When I got a grip on my phone, I looked and it said 3:28 AM. I had my alarm set for 4:15 so I decided to get up. I had everything setup from the night before. There was only one problem: I couldn't find my wallet. I looked for about 5 min and found nothing. Looking for a wallet always sucks, that feeling is greatly magnified at 3:45 AM. I was seconds from giving up and going back to bed. Then I remembered about some work clothes I threw in the washer the night before. Wallet found; time to fish. On the way down, I had to back track about 5 min because the gas station wasn't open yet and I needed coffee. Rough start to the day- man I'm glad I stuck it out.

I walked up to the spot and decided to go with the OSG proven method of lipless cranks during dark. I made my first cast and was disappointed with the distance of it. I was only about 20 yds out and I was shooting for 40. I started cranking and about halfway in WHAM! I could instantly tell I had a tank. Almost immediately, I heard a splash so I assumed it was a bronzie. After feeling how big the fish was and how it was fighting, I ruled out smallmouth. Luckily, the fish went with the current and got into some really shallow water that made it easier to land. I looked down and saw a big cat. I assumed it was a flathead, but soon realized it was a channel. It measured out at 26" exactly. At the time, I thought a FO channel was 28". I also got an 11" smallie with the crankbait about 4 ft off the bank. Daylight broke and I decided to try other lures. I tried a white grub and a tube with no action. I have caught a lot of fish overall at the spot I was at, but something told me to move on. On my walk, I looked up the ODNR's site and saw a FO channel was 26" :) I'm not too confident in estimating their weight, so maybe you cat guys can help me with that.

I arrived at the spot and immediately tied on a chartreuse jighead with a white grub. I was working it through the current by basically just keeping tension on the line as it drifted. On my third cast there, I felt tension and set the hook. After a pretty weak fight, I landed a 16.5" Fish Ohio sauger. If I hadn't already eaten one of these recently, it would have been a great eater. I followed that up with a rare LMR largemouth at 12". About 30 min later, I got another saug that was only 10".

It was 8:35 AM, and I was just minutes away from starting my "one last cast sequence". I tied a tube back on and walked upstream to where the current seam starts. There is a hole next to it that fish sit in and pick off baitfish/craws. I was trying to work the hole (insert joke here) to no avail. I casted back into the current so the tube would naturally fall into the hole. The lure did so, and I picked it up and dropped it. On the drop, I felt a tap. I tightened up the line and simultaneously saw the fish start to run to the side with it. I set the hook and immediately drag started peeling. I kept the rod tip up and tried to budge the beast. I saw a huge boil where she had just turned and that confirmed this baby was a monster. I played it safe and patient cause I had been so tired of big fish coming off. She never did jump. I thought maybe I had a gigantic saugfish or something cause she stayed down. Every second until she was on the bank was absolutely nerve racking. I feel like when smallies get over 18", they just look different. This one was no exception at 19", which beats my previous PB of 18.5". I snapped some pics and then ate her raw of course. Just kidding, I let her go. I decided to end the day on that note. My first cast was my PB channel and my last cast was my PB smallie. I'm really glad I didn't go back to bed.
Also, I used the same setup I always use to catch these: zebco 33, ugly stik lite and 10 lb trilene. If you see anyone fishing the LMR with a spincast reel that is over 7 years old, chances are it's me. I was born with a zebco in my hand, many people have tried to talk me into switching. I still haven't had a situation where it didn't work for me. The funny thing is, my entire life I looked at guys with spinning reels and thought to myself: it's a shame, he has no idea what he's missing... Which is exactly how all you guys feel about me hahaha. What a day!!!

I've heard about this phenomenon but never witnessed it until May 3 or 4th (don't remember what day we fished) we were fishing off Lorain at night and while looking north we noticed red blinking lights and a bunch of other lights. We didn't know what we were seeing at first until I remembered hearing about this phenomenon taking place in the spring. Turns out we weren't going crazy and we actually got to witness it. Pretty darn neat to see. It looked like we were seeing cedar point from the huron area but we were actually seeing the entire Canadian coast from Lorain. Nuts!
Did anyone else see it?

I am looking for someone out there with a HB 798CI HD SI COMBO that would be willing to share/swap some snapshots with me.

I just installed this new Humminbird sonar and since I installed this myself and this is my first experience with both the DI and the SI, I am not confident everything is as it should be.

My SI views of the underwater world are a bit disappointing. (In the promo videos these guys show alot of bottom detail with amazing clarity... after a couple of trips out I am not that amazed with mine.)

What I would like to do is exchange some snapshots with another 798 owner... same lake, same general vicinity to see it my results are up to what they should be.

So if you have the 798 HD SI unit and are a regular on some of my home lakes (Portage, Nimi, Berlin, SF, Milton, or others nearby) PM me and we can work out the details on how to exchange some same data captures from these units.

Returned to D can after a good day yesterday. My good friend Steve Carlson came along with us today and a group of his associates. The fish were very cooperative finishing with 42 walleyes. I have not made any program changes over the last 11 days and we have been successful everyday, 40 Tru-Trips, scorpion spoons and 30 to 40 leads. We did increase the speed to 1.9 knots anything slower didn't produce fish for us. Can't say enough of running shorter leads when running Tru-Trip divers. If you haven't seen the new bare naked Tru-trip visit your local tackle shop. See you on the water!

South End,,, South winds, white caps, hard to hold anchore over 'stumps'.
LOST ANOTHER ANCHOR! 2 in 2 trips! TG they were just lead$$$

Friends Tom & Bill showed up so I told them where we were marking lots of suspended specks.
Hundreds of marks over a 1/4mi drift, 5'-10' down over deep 11'-20' water.
Bill couldn't hold anchor either so we started drifting.
Slip bobber 8'-10' down, 3 large splits a long shank hook with a LARGE fathead.
OR flatline'n 2 or 3 splits and plain hook & fathead 30'-40' back.
NO JIGS = NO SNAGS!!! :p
Chris & I left kinda early with 36 over 10" specks and 2 large gills.
(Tom & Bill did about the same)
MOST of the fish had EGGS. Some of the egg sacks were VERY small w
small, dark yellow & bloody eggs???? Late or 2nd spawn?
