So Fly…So Fresh…

So over the past few years I have made a few attempts at fly fishing and to be honest, those past attempts have been mostly humbling. I’ve long been enamored with the idea of battling smallmouth bass with a fly rod since I re-discovered the one Dad left me before retiring to the Texas coast. That said my past poor results with the fly rod (when I know the fish are active) often caused me to retreat to the comfort of the known…familiar spinning gear.

Last fall Dad took me to Orvis and we picked out a new 9 foot, 4pc, 4wt Clearwater II fly rod for my birthday. That was a lot of money for my taste, especially considering my poor fly fishing results up till then…but it somehow motivated me to get more serious about learning the fly fishing game. I’ve always thought fishing gear is a lot like golf clubs. You can buy the “best”, most expensive clubs in the world but it doesn’t mean a damn thing if you can’t hit the ball. It’s the same with stream fishing. If you can’t “read the water” and locate active fish, it really doesn’t matter much what you use.

After taking the Orvis 101 class and finally learning the basics of fly casting, I have fished almost exclusively with the fly rod this year in familiar stream haunts…I’d like to think after 20+ years of fishing this particular stretch of stream I understand where the fish are going to be at different times of year. And I must admit the new fly rod (and casting knowledge) has made a world of difference in my fly fishing results. My wade fishing feels like it has evolved from spinning gear’s “search and destroy” to a more elegant and satisfying form of “surgical finesse”.

Yes, I do still screw up my casting loop in the wind sometimes, but when everything is in sync, and the fly lands softly where it needs to be, and you can see the wake darting out from the shoreline weeds and feel/see that smallmouth pounce…wow! In between, there are also several panfish (rock bass, sunfish/blue gills, crappies) that will take my poppers, wooly buggers, and clouser minnows to keep things interesting between battles.

But it is bronze on the end of a fly rod that really gets my heart racing. Suddenly it’s like so many things seem to be coming together. Past river knowledge, new fly casting knowledge and equipment to match. Even better, my results are getting better each time out. I have yet to be skunked in 10 or so outings this year. In a total of 6 hours of fishing over 2 days this past Memorial Weekend, I landed 10 bronze backs…the smallest about 12 inches and largest a little over 17 inches long. What a blast!

Fly rod bronze is everything I ever imagined it could be...I’m hooked.

My FOM partner was feeling well enough to join me for the Buckeye Lake stop on the FOM series. Eeked out a limit, and managed one nice 3 plus fish for Big Bass. My girl can fish! She had several keepers and a bunch of dinks as we headed away from the crowd drilling their motors to the wood running East of the Marsh and we enjoyed a quiet day fishing a canal mid-lake mostly by ourselves. I pointed out a point for her to cast to, where I knew a fish was lurking, she got there first while my bait plopped down 2 feet left and 2 seconds later..........big fish for me! First time I have ever gotten big fish over her, but at least I gave her the spot first this time so I was a gentleman.

Also the first trip out for our yet to be born and yet to be named son. The little guy only 5 months along got his first limit fishing with mom (literally). He's not keeper size yet so he's staying in mom's livewell until October. Both plan to join me on Indian in a couple weeks, hopefully Delaware in July, but big brother may need to sub in for the last stop in August on O'Shag.

After the Legacy event was over last weekend she and I went out and caught a bunch more pitching up in Whestone where I hadn't fished in the am with our 8 year old who was chucking his crank bait all day long on main lake stuff. What a day to go out and limit with my 8 year old, then fun fish with mom for a hour and whack some more. My gratitude to the willing and chubby fish of Delaware Lkae Ohio.

Busy busy busy fishing w/my summers off. Last weekend was the 2nd stop on the FOM Legacy Adult/Junior series w/my youngest son Colin. Pre-fishing was like shooting fish in a barrel, but I had ice on my boat Saturday am. After a fog delay we headed out to most of the dozen or spots where I had found fish on crank baits. Concentrated on spots where he could cast with little interference from annoying obstacles..........just chuck and wind. We boated over 30 fish, and he got his first experience culling fish. Nothing big (6.7 total), and he wanted to stay w/the crank baits, though I knew a little flipping might bring us a bigger fish or two, but it was his day not mine. Lost 2 quality fishing the last 10 minutes, one was a at least in the hawg conversation but the hooks just gave out from catching all day. What a blessing, what a great day.

I have only owned 2 boats, my latest being a 19' Javelin 389T that I picked up last Fall. After having the trailer brakes and bearings shaken down by the guy whos done all my horse trailers over the years, and the motor run through by my man Ed at MV Marine, I had some time to play with it over the last of the Fall days.

I am now in full rehab mode, starting in the front of the boat for the most part. I attached a couple photos during work on the front deck where I dropped in recessed TM tray and not pictured dropped in a pair of rod save retractable rod straps. Don't you love that lovely bow shroud? My next posting should show it rehabbed after cutting new panels for the switches and plugs on the shroud out of red carbonfiber panel. Gonna look sweet and remove some of the ugly up there in front.

I removed all the old GPS, depth finder cables and installed two Lowrance Elite units: one on the console the other on the bow. I needed to install an new shoot thru hull transducer for the console unit and so into the bilge area I ventured.

After 2 evenings bent over the back of the boat, not only did I have the tranducer in, but along the way found one dead bilge pump, and some sketchy wiring form my recirc and aerator pumps. So I installed a new bilge pump, redid the wiring for most of the 1/2 dozen pumps in the boat, neatly zipped it into place and closed it up. Alogn the way I got to know the boat a lot better, prevented some future headaches from potentially dead livewell pumps, and gave myself a pat on the back for a job well done.

We never know what we will find in life when poking aorund the bilge, but I thnnk we can often prevent problems, and upgrade our lives by paying attention to the nasty things in life.

I am excited to show you my rehabbed bow area in the very near future!

OOPS I DID IT AGAIN..........Can't get that awful Brittany Spears tune out of my head......and here's why!

So surprise, my wife tells me Valentine's Day that I'm gonna need to show another one how to fish in the coming years. That'll be 4 ranging from 25 to infant! Our youngest, my Legacy tournament partner took the news a bit hard....Hey big guy you are still my favorite fishing buddy! I know you will step up to the plate and be a great big brother just like your big brother.

God bless my wife and her sensitivity to my addiction with fishing. After I recovered a bit from the shock she told me she still wants to fish the FOM tournaments, but by late summer it might be a bit tough. Told my little guy I may need him to pinch hit and replace mom in some tournaments this summer.

Then I told him his new baby brother (or sister) will eventauly need someone to show them how to catch crawdads, put a worm on a hook, flip a jig.........

Oh man I am too old for this:confused:. Well then again according to recent events I guess I'm not :D Life is certainly full of surprise and surprise I'm gonna be a Dad again.

See now I'll need a bigger boat of course to take mom and two younger kids out fishing.

I had a great year fishing for bass, but when Fall hit and the tournaments were in the rear view mirror I went low tech for some fun and exercise & to reaquaint myself with WHY I fish. Should I have been honing my craft to prepare for the 2013 tounrnament season? Yeah I guess so, but I've learned in life you never arrive at success. I had a house full of trophies from a different sport, and when I started fishing I swore I'd never fish competively. Then my wife talked me into fishing some tournaments with her and we had fun together. As I found some success doing this, I began to see that drive to want to "succeed" in fishing. But what is success? Trophies, money, acclaim. Been there done that in other things in life. I am all for being dedicated, but dedicated to what? How about dedicated to learning about fishing and dedicated to my family. With a backback of a few lures, a spinnign rod, some cheap shoes and my old subaru wagon I started driving along the GMR, Mad River, Honey Creek, and elsewhere looking for smallmouth and spots. I found them and had a blast, but found a rejuvination for why I fish. F-U-N! I'll hit the FOM tournaments with my wife, the Legacy series with my son again in 2013, but try to take them out for other adventures like exploring new lakes, showing them some magical mornings where hybrids rip through a Zara Spook, and treat my son to his first smallmouth. Both the apostles Mathew and Mark ask us what do we profit if we gain the world but forfeit our soul? What do I gain by catching fish alone and lose my wife and son?
