The Old River

There is a place on the river
Just past the bend
Where the current turns,
The cool waters spin
Trees line the banks
Rocks line the trees
There are acorns and needles
Pinecones and leaves
There’s a line in the water
One side dark, one side light
Cold water and warm
Come here and collide
Sand, silt, and pebble
Rest on boulder and stone
The water will change them
Won’t leave them alone
There’s an island that splits
The old river in two
I take pause to eat lunch
And take in the view
Or tie on a fly, soft bait or jig
Warm my cold fingers
Over a fire of twigs
At this place on the river
In thought I often return
It’s this place on the river
I long to adjourn
