Well I waited and waited for the buck and finally decided I wanted to take another deer before gun season. I was out Saturday morning and in the woods around daybreak, a little later than I would have liked. I sat in one of my newer stand locations that I hadn't hunted before but it was on a good trail. The snow was still on the ground so I could see that they were heavily using the area. Finally around 10:30 I was thinking of getting out of my tree for the morning to site my gun in with my brother. I looked behind me and here come 2 does(so I thought). The first one got up beside me and I shot and hit, unfortunately a bad hit. I hit it low and in the guts but I split it right open with my broadhead. Seeing how it was split open I watched it go away and figured it would lay down. I went and checked about 2 1/2hrs later and in fact it was down. There was a real good trail it left me to follow so I didn't really feel like I was rushing it too much. I thought it was nearly dead so I touched its face with my boot and it sorta came back to it, jumped up, and ran 20 feet and fell back down. I walked over to it and shot it again with my bow to put it down. I was unlucky to get the bad shot but I was lucky that it split open like that.

Yesterday my buddy showed me how to de bone, clean up and process the meat from skinning to packaging. I think it took around 5 hours.

I learned alot from this bow kill. Hopefully Saturday/sunday I can go get one with my gun.

Take what the deer gods give you! Glad you recovered this one, it happens if you spend enough time. Nice job.

Congrats Bill. You are getting some experience in this year for sure.

Oh since you are now experienced in dressing a gut shot deer I will just call on you the next one I encounter.:D Dressing a gut shot deer does not even begin to compare to a nice vitals shot. It is kind of like cleaning a BIG rabbit.

I am glad to hear it turned out well for you. You made the right move waiting to go after her. Based on her still getting up though may make you even more patient the next time though.;)

I forgot to mention and intended to that it ended up being a Button Buck! I started to elude to that in my post then got sidetracked and finished up my post later.

I wondered if that is what you were starting to say when you said you "thought" that 2 does came in.;)

Well you can still get out there and nail that buck and finish off the season with a bang.
