First off, thanks for the sub forum. :eat:

I am new to this and know of the more well known items out there, like blackberries, mulberries, morels, ramps etc. Never have any luck finding ramps, wild onions or morels though. I just recently started researching what else we can eat in ohio and there is way more than I expected. I cooked up some fried rice with wild garlic just this weekend, and have some mayapples in my woods that I am keeping an eye on. Anyone eat garlic mustard? How about tubers, anyone actively search these out?

We used to dig dandelions with my Grandma when I was a kid.

She'd cook them with bacon and vinegar.

Tasted endive.

I'm pretty much basic:

black rasberries
blackberries
morels
ramps

I've gathered and tried puff balls and hickory jacks and never cared for them....could very well be me and my preparation, but I don't pick them any more.

montagc - if you do locate ramps, just dig a third or less of them. Return annually and repeat...there should be plenty each year. I have a spot on some public land littered with thousands of ramps...seriously. 2 big hillsides covered up in ramps....high traffic area with hiking trails right through em, but nobody digs them.

What do you guys use the ramps in? Just curious as I have seen them on occasion but have never taken any.

You can use them in any dish that you'd use garlic or onions. My favorite is fried with potatoes and bacon. I freeze the greens in water filled freezer bags and use them when I crockpot meats.

Next time I come across some out in the wild I will have to pull a few to try them.

I've had fiddlehead ferns. The're good. You have to be sure you have the right fern (ostrich fern). Please explain what fern tails are. ?

mushrooms: morels, then in the summer: chanterelles, black trumpets, and hericium, and in the fall: sheephead mushrooms. just to name a few of the most popular.

Anyone do wild grapes or what I think are called scuppernongs? Any tips on taming wild grapes?

Im not in a good area for wild edibles for some reason. My first few years here I hunted for morels and never had any luck. I pick and eat wild chives when I find them , they usually make a good mid day snack while fishing. This year I located a lot of ramps , I even pulled some up and transplanted them in my yard and they started growing. I know where there is a cherry tree and I pick the cherries when they are ripe but there is a serious lack of any other type of berries around here. Very few blackberries , they are a rare sight , no blueberries or huckleberries. I think I found some wild strawberries but Ive never seen any berries on the plants yet.

Do you have cattails, arrowheads, mayapples, daylilies?? There should be tons of things to forage for in your area.

Ramps, poke greens and fiddleheads. Poke greens,,,,Make sure you pick them when they're small to avoid getting ill.
