Just curious if anyone else would like to see a Morel forum. I like looking at other people's morel finds and pics.

I am a huge morel hunter, but I don't think it is necessary. It is at best a 7 week season and very few hunt anything other than morels. Folks post pics and have discussion in the Lodge and IMO that is fine. I just don't think there is enough activity to merit the work. I suspect it would sit idle with little to no activity 10 months out of the year.

How about a wild edible forum. Morels, puffballs, chanterelles , chicken of the woods, scarlet cups, ramps, fiddleheads ect.. That way it can be active a lot more throughout the year

Who would be in charge of making it happen? I would be a frequent contributor of it.

I will PM a mod or Admin to see if they think that "Wild Edibles" could be added as a forum in the "Hunting" thread. Heck I'll even offer to moderate it.

I agree with the "wild edibles forum" also. Surprised we don't have one already. Glad you brought it up & hope it happens.

I sent an email a couple of days ago, to the contact us at the bottom of the page. I have not heard anything yet. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Why the need for another section? The Lodge gets little use this time of year anyways, other than mushroom discussions. There’s no need to clutter up the board with special sections for every imaginable topic.

I guess the only reason would be that I didn't even know that people posted info on morels anywhere, on OGF. I accidentally stumbled across it, a couple of weeks ago, while looking for turkey reports. There is a very nice page on facebook that has lots of pics and info, but the majority of the people are from Indiana.
We have sub forums just for general discussion in the Lake Erie board, and there is a Turkey forum(season is a few weeks longer than mushrooms), so I just didn't think it would be asking too much.
Also, while just looking through the Turkey Hunting forum, the second topic down is Mushrooms.

I think it is a good idea. They have an ice fishing forum and this year that only lasted one week. LOL. Heading out after work tonight looking for some shrooms!

I'll admit, I have no idea why mushroom posts end up in the turkey hunting section. It's not even turkey season. Maybe just add "mushroom discussions" to the description of the Lodge. I've seen plenty of sites that have separate sections for every imaginable topic, and it gets rediculous.

As a moderator I will at least bring this up to Brandon but I have to admit that I am of the same view as M.Magis. This really seems to be an unnecessary forum. In another 3-4 weeks the mushroom discussions will end for another 10 months or so. I don't see this like the ice fishing forum. That topic gets a TON of discussion during the ice fishing season and there is also a good bit of discussion during the rest of the year by folks. Perhaps it would be appropriate to list it in the title description of whichever forum that is deemed appropriate?

Again, this is not my call in any way. That is just my view on it but I will pass this info on.

Yea but you have berries in the summer, and I believe other sorts of mushrooms throughout the year. You would atleast be using it for 2 seasons a year IMO

Right, a mushroom alone forum wouldnt get too too much use, but a wild edible forum would get much more. I can name at least 10 types of wild eds that grow at different time throughout the year. But if we don't want to clutter of the site with junk I understand. I'll pm you a list of forums that barley get any use that way we can take them off and clean up the site

There's always something good growing in the woods or fields . I've even found oyster mushrooms in the winter. Right now we have morel posts spread all over the forum . I think we have room for it. How hard is it to add one?

If you just had a general foraging or "edible wild plant" forum, there are tons of things to forage for, mushrooms are just a small part and with just mushrooms there're certain ones that can be harvested in spring/summer and fall. The same goes for plants, for example there's wild leeks(spring), wild potato vine(spring/summer/fall),cattails(spring/summer/fall,, wild onions,(spring-fall) wild chives(all year),day lilies(spring-fall) ,pawpaw(fall)s,jerusalem artichoke( first frost through winter), wild plums(late summer/fall),spice bush(spring/fall),quick weed(mid summer),may apple(late spring),ground cherries(fall),yellow nut grass(spring-fall),arrowhead(duck potato)-( late summer to early spring), and all the wild berries(summer-fall) and that's just a small sample of what's in our Ohio woods and fields!! There is something that can be foraged/harvested during the whole year...including winter. Including plants that have other uses besides eating, for example jewelweed is exellent for preventing and relieving symptoms of poison ivy and grows all over the place. So maybe the argument for not having a forum for just morels as some merit.....but a general foraging/edible wild plant forum would have daily input ALL year long. One week in the spring, summer and fall I eat only things I have foraged or caught/killed just for the fun/challenge of it.....and I never go to bed hungry during those three weeks!!LOL There's just something plain old satisfing about sitting down to a tasty feast that you provided all by yourself. Sure it's not for everyone but I think it would have a far bigger following than some guys on here think.

was it that long? :D

Id love to see a wild edible section. that would be really neat i'd think. As an outdoors fishing site, I think its more worthy than other subsections on this site.

Also I think it should be on the main page, not under the hunting area. I never even knew morels were discussed in the hunting area.

like the poster above stated, it would be a perfect fit to replace this unused area, so it wont add any more subforums ot the main page.

This forum is THE place to talk about The 2009 Vermilion Hawg Fest! Presented by OGF, hosted by the City of Vermilion. Sponsored by WKYC TV-3, Quaker Steak and Lube, Sharpnack II Chevrolet and South Shore Marine.

there hasnt been a post here since last summer. 9 months.

reading throught the hawgfest posts, i dont mean any disrespect towards it, but if its in the past, it might be time to move on.

I've never collected mushooms, or any wild edibles besides snacking on a few berries. Yet, I think a wild edible forum would be great. "Wild edibles, foraging, plants/mushrooms". Anything like that would work. I would love to be able to just post a pic of some plants, berries, or shrooms, on the forum to ask about, knowing it would be in a place where the right people would find it.

I also agree that the vermillion hawg fest could probably go, why not replace it with something people would use... if a few months from now it seems to get too little use, then get rid of it. Just my 2 cents

I'm with you though I don't think we'd need to be concerned that it would ever get to little use, in fact I think it would just grow with time. I can see it easily being one of the more popular non fishing forums.......but sadly it doesn't seem like any of the people in charge give a are going to do anything to make it happen.......but then that's not much of a surprise!!!!

I've been out twice this week & haven't found any wich is unusual for me. Found about 120 blacks at the end of April & a few yellows & that's been it. I'll look again over the weekend but I'm losing hope. Congrats on your finds in Summit Co.. I'm not that far from from you. Aw c,mon, let's do the new forum already. The other websites I go to have them & that's really all I go there for, everything else I find on here.

A wild edibles forum would be great.
I think it would get a bit of traffic, except in the winter.

Spring, summer, and fall there are always things to forage.

Easy fellas...we don't just throw forums up overnight, and to be considered we need to see a plethora of requests/activity.

Considering that, I think a "Wild Edibles" forum would work, however I'm not sure at this point where it would go. It's seasonal (yeah so is Ice Fishing, but we're a fishing site first and foremost), and I'd prefer to see it as a subforum somewhere. I'm open for suggestions, and agree that it shouldn't be in the hunting area. If we can nail this today, I'll get it implemented this evening and even feature it in our next newsletter.

Thank you Brandon. That was all that I wanted to see, an acknowledgement. I feel that wild edibles would be perfect for what we are looking for. All I want is a place that we all can go to to find what we are looking for. Thanks again.

No prob man...my apologies for not addressing you guys sooner, had a lot going on lately with the crappie tourney, etc...

Anyways, I'm thinkin a sub forum of home and garden would suffice. If the forum blows up, we can revisit the idea of making it it's own....
