saw some things today that made me wonder:
1.) why must people go through a pack of fisherman at top speed? plenty of room around us but at least two morons did it today while i was out..no courtesy/common sense..

2.) saw someone on the lake letting their lab out to swim and was wondering is that safe in this cold of water? what if it had problems--would the owner have rescued it?

my buddys lab hunts in freezing weather longer than i will, and it is hard to keep him from jumping in the water right off the boat while trolling. talk about a fire drill to not get him tangled up in lines. it may have been him and his lab that you saw today. you have to keep an eye on him to keep him from jumping in while trolling.

29 years ago, my oldest son (then 12) was home because school was closed. He was bored and I asked him if he wanted to take a walk down by the river. He said it's too cold to go outside (it was -20 without the wind chill). I said we can go but we have to make sure we have no exposed skin. We had snowmobiles and the required clothing. So we got bundled up & off we went.

When we got down to the river behind the house, our golden retriever showed up and invited himself. As we round a bend near a riffle (open water), 2 big black domestic ducks were in the water, and the dog went in after them. I thought he'd freeze up and I'd have to carry him home, but after the birds flew off, he got to shore, and went right into the snow, layed down, rolled over on his back and used the snow to dry the water out of his fur. he got up, shook off, and away he went, no worse for wear.

I was somewhat amazed.

Dogs know how to deal with cold water.

X2!

This water isn't considered cold to a lab.

Fishing near the Lake Erie Islands is worse regarding high speed boaters with no respect for fishing boats.

Then again, it's not just our lake and as long as they are following boating rules, what can we say?

+$5/gallon gas keeps some from going around a pack of fishing boats.

What can we say?
Learn a little respect for one...and a lot more while im at it.....
my wifes a teacher---she deals with teenagers all the time that lack coutesy & respect.....i would love to teach also (math) but because of the way people act these days there is no way i could handle it....there is just a lack of common decency....im glad most of the guys i've met on this site & out fishing have it....just because someone isn't breaking a law shouldn't give them a right to be an idiot.....but then again, i guesse they get away with it all the time....just turn on the news channel or go to any mall....i just wish the outdoors were different, where we could all just get a long

I fish out of Lorain, and as a rule, I find the people to be patient and considerate and helpful. Try to ignore the idiots, don't let them screw up a good day.

My dogs have gone in for their swim the last two weekends before heading back to shore. I get a nice cold shower when they come back in the boat.

My lab now 13 1/2 used to jump in when trolling too. If he felt hot; forget about it there was no stopping him...Dude would swim next to the boat while trolling; he actually started to head for an inline planer and I had to yell something fierce to turn him around.:p Thank god I had a deep v back then b/c lifting a 90# wet dog over the side wall was always a trick. 11 miles out and a black head and tail sticking out of the water - never forget it! At 13 1/2 his legs arent steady like before and he stays at the camper now.

First my lab, tolerated the cold water duck hunting in december, but we kept a close watch on what and how much cold she could take...she died 2 yr.s ago at 10 years old,my first retreiver, great dog.Now we have a Chessie and the colder it is the better he likes it.They can get hyperthemia, and the breed has a lot to do with what they can tolerate..Labs and Chessies were bred for this.
