im looking for an all purpose knife. i have a buck fixed blade, ive had this knife forever, even gutted a few deer with it, but i went online and looked at the review and the blade broke in SEVERAL reviews. so im looking for a new knife. i will carry an outdoor edge saw and an ontario machete. overkill, yep, but why not, i love cutting stuff. i will also carry a SOG folder. so what do you men carry for cutting wood, cord and batoning?

I have a folding "irish" made knife I got from the place I worked. Plastic handle and a fine 4" blade. I've cur firewood, gutted deer and slices about every other kind of stuff imaginable[ me too]. I have a SOG tool from gerber that I always pack cause it gets the job done.

Folder I carry a J.A.Henckles 6" lockback.
My favorite fixed blade is my W49 western bowie,
if I have it I don't need an axe.
The Westerns are getting rare, and are expensive now ($150-$300 hi side)
But I've seen good users (scratches, some discoloration) for as little as $40.
I havent seen any of the Henckles for sale.

I am a Buck Knife guy in general. Carry a Buck pocket knife all the time. I have a Buck model 110 folding hunter in my deer pack for whitetails and such. I use Rapala fillet knives for the obvious. Just too damn good for what I use them for! But my most recent purchase was the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife. I've been looking for a long time for a knife like this. Gonna put it to good use this season.

For hunting i use a Buck Omni hunter 12 point fixed with gut hook. Rapala fillet knife for fishing. Camping and hiking i use a gerber LMF II fixed. Everyday cary i use either my gerber or leatherman multi tools (both issued) along with a buck 110 locking folder or my benchmade locking folder (also issued). I have a sog seal pup, but not very impressed with it. My buddy got a SOG multi tool issued and its very druable. For a great all around knife that your going to cut wood with and put to the test, the Gerber LMF II would be my choice. Very durable and comes with a great sheath.

minnowhead, please tell me what it is about this knife that impresses you so much? i still havent gotten a primary backpacking knife yet and that why i opened this thread. i saw one at gander mtn, its not bad, but im not sure about the seration on the blade. i also like the SOG seal pup if i go with a serated blade, but i see id lose some blade by the handle.

Smitty82, ive checked out the gerbers too and i like them, but the serations still bother me. looks like those knives are where bear got his design from..just sayin';)

EZ, This is my favorite knife: Schrade Old Timer Deerslayer-(see pic)
When hiking, I downsize to a stout full tang 5" blade for weight savings. As a young man, I favored a nice Bowie, I learned that a Victorinox swiss army knife worked for 99% of your tasks. I'm not Crocodile Dundee and I've only seen black bear twice in 100+ outings. In other words, they're for cutting steaks, cords, and sharpening skewers for summer sausage, crawdads and frog legs. I know you like frog legs.LOL! --Tim .................................................. .................................................. ................................................

EZ, what I like most about this knife is the 1) Gerber name, to me they have a great quality blade. Great to hold an edge and should last a long time. I usually perfer wood and brass type handles like the Buck Knives offer. But this knife has the rubber grip that feels really good. 2) is the warranty. Like to know a manufacturer will stand behind a product when I drop $60 on it. And 3) is the "extras" the knife has. Firestarter, whistle, built in sharpener! Really cool to me that I can throw it in my pack and have it when I need it. I don't plan on lashing it to a stick for a spear and fend off wild hogs. :D But I have been looking for this style knife for a while. I looked at the SOG Seal Pup and was going to buy it (love that knife). I still might add it to my collection. A serated blade doesn't bother me. Nice to have, pain to sharpen. The Gerber LMF II is almost identical. The BG Ultimate is probably based off of it only with BG 's initials on it! I'm a fan of the survivor shows, so his endorsement doesn't bother me. It would if it was a crap blade/company. I plan on putting to the test this year and confident it will hold up well. My 2 cents.

well after saving a little cabbage and keeping a daily eye on ebay, i finally got the knife ive really been wanting. i picked up this bark river north star for $82 its lightly used and needs sharping, but overall in great condition. i got it for less than 1/2 of a new one, so im VERY happy with it. i even got the orange micarta handle like i wanted and look how thick that blade is. im not sure i could break that in a vise:D

nothing but the kershaw blackout for me. it has spring assist opening, so all it takes is alittle push and the spring takes over and its open. i just keep it clipped on the inside of my pocket. its truely a one handed folder. its the handiest fishing knife i,ve ever owned. most of the time i need a knife one hand is busy, i just get the knife with my other hand and flip it open and start cutting. and they have a coated stainless blade.

I have several knives I use for camping, hunting, and similar uses. My most used knives are in my hunting pack. Here is a picture.

These are very useful and fill just about any need I may have. The fixed blade sheath knife is a cheap one from Wally world, made by Ozark Trail. It holds an edge real well and the shape works well for the uses I have for it. I have batoned wood with it as well as butchered game. The orange handled folder is from Outdoor Egde and has a great gutting blade built into it. The green handled folder is also from Outdoor Edge. It is a folding filet/boning knife that was gifted to me for teaching Hunter Ed courses. My hunting pack always has a cheap lockback or two in it as well. Game shears make small game cleaning and some camp shores quicker and easier.

Sweet Bark River ezbite!!!! I love those knives. I carry the Falkniven S1 for its corrosion resistant 440 stainless, but the core is VG10 which has excellent edge retention. It also has a full convex grind. I carry this with a leatherman wave, spiderco tenacious, folding saw, and a fiskars 14 hatchet. I can process some serious wood for winter excursions with these tools. I would love to carry a Bravo 1 from bark one day if the funds permit. Great knife, but dont forget to put ketchup and mustard on the blade to give it a nice patena. It will help prevent the blade from rusting and give a cool design too.
