View Full Version : Misc thought questions
Just some miscellaneous thoughts to discuss.
1. You fish for 3 days. You're fingers are too cold to clean the catch and you're too cheap to pay for cleaning. So how long are the walleye good before starting any cleaning ?
2. You limit out at 11:30 PM return to your vehicle, then go back out at 12:30 AM (hour later) and limit out again. Problem ?
3. You half limit in the AM, return to the dock, then late that evening you half limit again. Do you keep the first half limit with you, or is it OK to return to the vehicle and ice the first half limit ?
4. Is it OK to half clean on the boat. Not discarding anything overboard, but removing the insides only ? Is this still "In the round" ?

1. I've kept fish on ice (no water) for two days before cleaning them, and they were fine. Do you think your local fish monger throws out his fish each night, and sets new fish on the ice to display?
2. No problem, unless you are keeping the fish. They go by a 24 hour period. It isn't like you can keep a limit, quit at 11:59 then start fishing at midnite, and keep another limit, and claim it's a different day, allowing you a second limit.
3. Doesn't matter, as long as you don't have more than your limit in your possession at any given time.
4. I believe that is legal, but not 100% positive.
Usually its the park ranger comin round then if not the sheriff but to have 12 fish in the cooler with you along with a gamewarden isnt a good thing.

1.Gut them and cover in ice they'll be alright.
2. Illegal need 24 hrs after catching limit. They have been watching for people returning to fish for a double limit and do catch them.
3. Legal as long as you dont catch more than your limit in 24 hrs.
4.Gut, but leave head and skin and scales for identification.

1. I have gone 2 days on ice max with no problems. The key is keeping them well iced.

The USDA considers fish to be "Fresh" - and sold as such - as long as they have been packed in ice for a period of no more than 3 days. So, actually keeping freshly caught fish packed in ice for no more than 3 days is fine. Drain the melted ice water off a few times a day - just to keep things more "Fresh".

Answer to number 4 - From Ohio Revised Code Currently on DNR website:
(I) It shall be unlawful for any person to possess a fish in any form or condition other than in the round while on or when unloading the fish from a boat, or while fishing from shore on any waters in this state where a fishing license is required. Provided further, it shall be lawful to possess fish in the whole or as a fillet with the skin attached while returning from the lake Erie islands on a commercial ferry boat.

Just got off the phone with Gino Barna, Lake Erie Enforcement Supervisor. To answer your second question the answer is those fish need to be transported home, cottage, campground, etc. and can not be left in your vehicle while fishing day number two. If you get checked at your car and have a double limit you will have some explaining to do. Makes sense, if they ask to see your coolers at the launch ramps and see a double limit anyone could say it was the day befores catch. That was the answer I got from D of W.
