What is the difference between jigging rods and rigging rods? I have a 6' 6" ml fast rod for jigging but always wanted 7' ML for jigging but the manufacturer calls it a rigging rod. Any suggestions for reef jigging rod length?

Out of curiosity, why so long for jigging rod?

Rigging rods are slower action rods than jigging rods. It would likely feel soft and mushy. Not what you want for jigging.

Honestly there is no justifiable reason for a 7' rod over a 6' rod except for I want one. That's a terrible reason but I am new to the vertical jigging. I have been to several inland lakes where the cast and jig back retrieve is used so for that the longer the rod, the longer the casts.

I am looking at the Fenwick Elite series walleye rods and the rigging rod has the same specs as the jigging rod, minus 3". That is the only reason I asked. The rigging rod is 7' ML fast action and the jigging rod is 6'9" ML fast action rod. I appreciate your input. Probably just go with the shorter one because it says "Jigging" right on it.

IMHO and a quotable "het-ism", "don't worry about what the rod says, worry about how it feels to YOU!"

Just like everything else it comes down to personal preference.

To me there is much better versatility with a longer rod than a shorter rod.

To me a ML light rod is just too light for most of the presentations that I use on Erie. Inland lakes a ML is my first choice, on Erie where the average lure weight is 1/2 - 3/4 oz a ML just doesn't get the job done as well for me. For me a strong medium or even a medium heavy with a fast action works better.

A long rod can do anything a short rod can do but a short rod can not do everything you can do with a longer rod.

Again, just personal preference.

My go to spinning rod for everything I do on lake erie (except perch fishing) is a St. Croix Triumph 6'6" medium power, fast action (TRS66MF). I use it for jigging and for casting. Fantastic rod and not too pricey.

St. Croix Avid 5'-9" Medium Xtra Fast spooled with 8# Fireline Crystal and 15#Seagaur leader. Works just fine for vertical jigging and pump/snap casting.

I use a high end G Loomas for jigging heavier jigs and deeper water. I stick to the St. Croix Ledgend Elite for lighter applications.....

The individual preference on rod length could also have something to do with each fisherman's personal stature also. I would imagine that King Kong would feel more comfortable with a longer rod than Peter Pan would feel comfortable using:D

I like longer rods for the simple math. Rod tip speed creates more casting distance, jig hop height and distance moved horizontal, distance and time of fall. Some days none that is critical, others it is.

Also for jigging heavy jigs on the reefs a longer rod really reduces the fatigue factor over a shorter rod, You just don't have to work as hard to effectively move the jigs on the days they want it aggressively moved.

That is just my opinion.

The Fenwick HMG 6ft is my go to rod. I have the St. Croix avid in 6'6 and 6'3 amd a G loomis GLX but still prefer the HMG for its feel and hook set for jigging

My buddies and I all have the MOJO BASS RODS by St. Croix. 6'6 ML AWESOME ROD that has backbone but is also sensitve enough to feel the lightest jig on the bottom. Going for less than $100 and the Rod Shoppe.

This is just somthing to check into but st croix has a new rod out just for walleye jiging. They just came out this year, I think its called the eyecon? They are right around $100 and everyone I talk to say they are well worth the money. In fact one guy says it feels like a 2 or $300 rod. Some are for jiging and some are for rigging. check them out at cabelas.com.

I love my Avid 6 ML for jigging.

The Eyecons ( like the Trimuph and mojo bass ) are made in Mexico- if that makes a difference

I personally like a six foot medium power. I like loomis rods for lightness and sensitivity. I use a diawa veinto baitcast with twitching bar that brings in line with. Your thumb for two rod applications this works very well to keep tor rod angle vertical. I like the short rod its lighter and less affected by wind. Mike Knippenberg

I ended up going with the 6'9" Elite-tech walleye rod from fenwick. I like the feel, the light weight and the action seems like it is exactly what you need for vertical jigging. Only way to tell for sure though is to get the boat ready and hit the water!
